Can You Trust Your Doctor?
A CMS payment record reports a financial relationship. To interpret that record, first check the recipient, the year, and the type of payment. The CMS caution below explains the limits of drawing conclusions from reported financial ties.
What CMS Open Payments contains
The CMS Open Payments portal publishes reported payments and transfers of value to covered recipients. CMS separates general payments, research payments, and ownership or investment interests. OpenScript's snapshot contains only general payments for program year 2025.
General-payment records use nature-of-payment categories such as Consulting Fee, Food and Beverage, Travel and Lodging, and Royalty or License. A profile's category breakdown preserves those source labels; its largest-category line reports which category accounts for the largest share of its total dollars. CMS defines the source fields in its Methodology Overview & Data Dictionary (January 2026).
Start with the source record
Confirm the recipient using the exact NPI displayed on their profile. A name search locates candidates but cannot establish identity. On CMS, select the same program year and payment type before comparing amounts. Check separate years and payment files if you need information beyond this snapshot.
This site publishes a limited set of recipients with reported NPIs, so absence from OpenScript does not mean the CMS portal contains no records. Read How to read these numbers for the dataset scope and the meaning of each displayed figure.
Ask about the reported relationship
You can use a verified record to ask concrete questions:
- What activity does this reported payment describe?
- What does this nature-of-payment category mean for this record?
- Does this relationship involve the company behind a treatment we are discussing?
- Is the reported information accurate, or does it need review through CMS?
The payment amount and category supply facts about the reported transaction. They do not supply the recipient's explanation of that transaction. CMS's interpretation guidance and review and dispute link appear below.
